Cost & buying

Sauna or steam room: which one do you actually want?

They feel different, they cost different amounts, and one of them is a building project. A practical comparison before you commit.

In short

Choose a sauna if the room already exists and you do not want wet trades on site — it is assembled, needs no drain and is low maintenance. Choose a steam room if you are building or renovating anyway and someone will maintain it: it needs full tanking, falls to a drain and treated water, but the heat is gentler and you can stay in longer.

The honest answer is that most people who ask for one would be happier with the other, because the decision usually gets made on the experience and paid for on the construction.

Air
Sauna: 80–90 °C, dry. Steam: 42–48 °C, saturated
Room build
Sauna: timber cabin, assembled. Steam: tanked and tiled, a wet trade
Drainage
Sauna: optional. Steam: required
Water
Sauna: none. Steam: treated supply, or the generator scales
Maintenance
Sauna: low. Steam: descaling and water quality, ongoing
Retrofit
Sauna: straightforward. Steam: usually a demolition job first

The practical differences

Choose a sauna if

  • The room is already built and you do not want wet trades on site.
  • You want the heat to be dry and the session to be short and hot.
  • Low maintenance matters more than the sensory experience.

Choose a steam room if

  • You are building or renovating anyway, so tanking and falls can be designed in.
  • You prefer a gentler heat you can stay in longer.
  • Someone will maintain it — or you will put it on a Care plan.

If the honest answer is both, build the sauna first and leave the services for the steam room in the wall. That sequence costs a fraction of retrofitting later.
